First Ever Open Danish Nationals.
The First ever Open Danish Nationals where held at Vallensbaek Yacht club (just south of Copenhagen) in the weekend of the 9th and 10th of September. Just days befor it has been cold and rainy, but just ready for our championships the summer decided to come back. The forecast promised about 20 – 22 degrease , mostly sunny and winds between 10 to 16 knots on the Saturday decreasing during the day and very light winds on the Sunday.
8 races where planed and with the forecast of light wind on the Sunday, the race committee decided to make 5 races Saturday if possible. The wind didn’t drop during the day – on the contrary – it increased up to around 20 knots, but it was off land, so the water was flat – ideal for fast sailing!
Unfortunately not many sailors had found their way to Denmark for that weekend. We had hoped for some more sailors from Germany and Sweden, but are very happy that a couple of Germans and one Dutch sailor joined us after all.
After 5 races Saturday (with some capsizes and material problems) Thomas Paasch (Bimare XJ) was leading with only 2 points to Theo van Hilten (Aus Flyer).
Sunday morning everybody went out on the water, and a long day of waiting for a steady breeze started. Two times we had a start, but every time the race was abandoned because of dropping or shifting wind. At last after almost 5 hours on the water the breeze kicked in and we had a single race.
After 6 races with 1 discard the top 3 was this:
1. Thomas Paasch DEN 1 8 points 1 1 4 4 1 1
2. Theo van Hilten NED 8 11 points 2 4 1 3 3 2
3. Uwe Paulsen GER 9 13 points 3 3 3 1 dns 3
1st Danish champion Thomas Paasch
