Dannemann Cup 2005 cancelled
16.12.2004
After holding the event in 2003 and 2004 and as the result of a process of careful consideration, Centro Dannemann has decided not to hold the Dannemann Cup in 2005.
"The uncertainties surrounding a possible advertising ban for tobacco goods within the EU was the main factor in our decision to cancel the 2005 event," Centro Dannemann's Rosanna Pierantognetti explains. The fact that the media do not afford sailing events the desired coverage will also have had a less than positive impact on the decision.
From the very beginning the Dannemann Cup – an invitational regatta with 55 boats from all over the world – established itself in the A-Cat scene as a high-prestige event of close to world championship character. It goes without saying that Christian Zürrer, president of the Swiss A-Catamaran association and co-organiser, greatly regrets the decision announced by Centro Dannemann. However, over the past two years the Dannemann Cup has given the A-Catamaran class a huge world-wide publicity boost that may be termed unique for a non-Olympic category. The two events provided spectacular sailing sport and will be fondly remembered by all participants. Christian Zürrer: "Our unreserved thanks go to the responsible officers of Centro Dannemann and the entire organisation team for this superb event. On behalf of the A-Catamaran class we want to wish Centro Dannemann all the best for the future."
Although the international regatta calendar has lost one of its highlights, the individual national associations have been able to organise other spectacular sailing contests with top competitors from all over the world for the 2005 season. In addition to the national regattas and the Swiss championships with international contestants in Flüelen at the end of May, the top event of the European season will take place from 16 to 24 June 2005: the world championship event in Sanguinet in the south of France.
